#ImStaying – Ncumisa Mkabile

My name is Ncumisa Mkabile, I’m 27 years old female farmer from Khayelitsha in Cape Town.

I started farming in March 2020 when I had to close my takeaway business due to the Pandemic. The takeaway business was my only source of income and I needed to think of a plan, I started selling chicken and doing door to door deliveries at that time I was buying it from a supplier but when I saw the demand was high, I started growing my own and supplying people who would also like to start their own business.

On the 20 May 2020 I identified a piece of land and planted 20’000 seedlings of Spinach, after a few months I secured another piece of land and planted 20’000 seedlings of green peppers. Today I’m supplying huge supermarkets like Super spar Hilltop in Harare and local street vendors. My message to fellow South Africans is to start small with the little resources that you have and gradually grow. Create opportunities for yourself because no one is going to create those opportunities for you.

I’m staying because I feed the Nation for a living
