Proudly South African – Christiaan Burger

Christiaan Burger, a grade 9 student from Hartbeespoort received the wonderful news that he has been chosen to complete a 3 year post graduate Baccalaureate diploma in Japan at the United World College.

This is the first time that a South African candidate has received a scholarship from this prestigious college.

Christiaan is the youngest candidate that has ever been accepted out of more than 150 countries national committees to complete the UWC Japan. (1-year Pre-IB plus 2 years IB). A remarkable achievement! A truly prestigious moment in any young student’s life.

United World College (UWC) is ‘a worldwide network of Educational institutions with a joint mission to use educational bodies as a powerful tool to unite cultures for peace and a sustainable future.

UWC ISAK Japan opened in 2014 and is referred to as the “International School of Asia, Karuizawa (ISAK)” n. Japan has one of the smallest UWC schools, with approximately 200 students from across the world between the ages of 15 and 18 years.

There are currently 18 UWC-schools and colleges worldwide with an international office in London.

Our former president, Nelson Mandela, served as honorary-president of the UWC (1999–2013), as well as Lord Mountbatten and Prince Charles. The residing president of UWC is Queen of Noor of Jordan.

Christiaan fills his parents Annemarie and Bemmie Burger’s hearts with pride! He feels honoured, excited but also a bit nervous about what awaits him. He is looking forward to representing South Africa and his hometown Hartbeespoort.

Christiaan will travel to Japan to start his new adventure in August 2021.
