On Saturday, October 7, 2023, McDonald’s hosted a spectacular event that combined the charm of high tea with the excitement of promoting their latest venture: The McCafé. The day was a celebration of fashion, fabulousness, and the indomitable spirit of women from across Gauteng, who graced the red carpet with confidence and style. At the heart of the event was Zanele Mvelase, the remarkable owner and CEO of McDonald’s Hartbeespoort and Brits, whose inspirational life journey served as a beacon of hope and empowerment for all attendees. With passion in her voice, she shared her story, reminding every woman present that no obstacle, no matter how daunting, could deter them from achieving their goals. Zanele’s narrative resonated deeply, especially as she spoke of her humble beginnings and the challenges she faced as a woman aspiring to own her business. Despite being told she wasn’t worthy, Zanele defied the odds, proving her detractors wrong by not only owning one but two McDonald’s branches in Brits and Hartbeespoort.

Zanele’s journey, however, came with its share of sacrifices. She emphasized the significance of hard work and unyielding ambition, acknowledging that it often meant spending long hours away from family and missing pivotal moments in their lives. Her heartfelt advice struck a chord with the guests, highlighting the delicate balance between professional aspirations and the precious moments spent with loved ones. Zanele underscored the value of family, cautioning against the irretrievable loss of time and urging women to find equilibrium between their personal and professional lives. Amidst the inspiring anecdotes and empowering messages, this new venture is an exciting addition to the McDonald’s experience and promises to elevate the coffee culture with its exquisite blends and inviting ambiance.

Guests marvelled at the prospect of savouring rich, aromatic coffee while enjoying the camaraderie of their community. In essence, McDonald’s High Tea event and the opening of the McCafe became more than just a celebration of taste and style. It became a platform where women found encouragement, motivation, and the unwavering belief that they, too, could overcome challenges and achieve greatness. Zanele’s story served as a testament to the power of determination, inspiring every woman present to embrace their worth, chase their dreams, and create a future defined by their own terms.

The lovely MC Khanyisile Madlala of Zoe Media promoted her book “Arrested by His Love” with the audience and announced that a part of her book sales will be donated to RMHC.  Jeanine van der Merwe from Couch Me Now, demonstrated to the audience how negative and positive thoughts can generate energy that effect a person.

The proceeds from this event will be directed towards the Ronald McDonald House Charity (RMHC), benefiting the Nelson Mandela Children’s Hospital in Parktown, and the family rooms situated in The Chris Hani Baragwanath Academic Hospital in Soweto. RMHC’s CEO, Jo-Ann Joffe, passionately called upon the public to support their latest initiative. Their recent accomplishment includes the establishment of a lactation facility, a much-needed resource. The inspiration for this facility struck Jo-Ann when she observed mothers in the public waiting rooms of Baragwanath attempting to express breast milk into polystyrene cups for their ailing children. This heartfelt experience served as the driving force behind the creation of South Africa’s first-ever hospital-based lactation facility. Jo-Ann expressed her gratitude to Zanele for her steadfast support and unwavering belief in their mission. She described Zanele as one of the most genuine and compassionate individuals she has ever encountered. Those interested in contributing or getting involved are encouraged to reach out to RMHC directly.
