Where did your passion for the broker industry come from?

From my father. My father is a broker, and when I was younger, if anyone asked me, “what do you want to be when you grow up?” I would reply, “A broker, like my father!”

Do you think there is still a future for the broker industry in South Africa?

Yes, certainly. When it comes to commercial insurance there will always be a need for a broker. A broker needs to look at the risk and choose what cover the client/business needs.

What is the most rewarding thing in your industry?

The smile on the clients faces when their claim is paid out and we put them back in the same position they were before the loss.

What do you believe, is the biggest challenge facing the industry?

I would say that the biggest challenge is fraudulent claims. There were R787 million fraudulent claims in 2021. The chain reaction is …. it becomes more difficult to claim for legitimate losses and, of course, the premiums go up.
