Jannie Moolman and Melissa Moolman are both Hartbeespoort sweethearts and were nominated for the HBC Social Media Awards of 2019.  Jannie won the Artist/Musician award and Melissa was one of the runner ups for the Medical Practitioners award.

Jannie and Melissa met through Jannie’s longtime friend Henk Opperman, better known as Dozi at a family function. They had an instant connection. Later that year, Melissa was on holiday in Hartenbos and Jannie had a concert in the Western Cape. Pretending to drive through Hartenbos on his way to the concert, Jannie drove a 1200km detour just to see this beautiful girl. They just laugh about it now, but both realize that, that detour was probably the major turning point in their relationship.

After courting Melissa for eight years, he finally popped the question in 2017. They were engaged for six months and had their fairytale wedding at the beautiful Lace and Timber Wedding Venue. They started their exciting journey as Mr and Mrs Moolman in Hartbeespoort.

Being married to an entertainer is not as glamorous as it sounds, the working hours are challenging. Melissa is a Dental Practitioner and has set working hours during the week whereas Jannie works weekends performing all over the country.

Melissa loves to tell Jannie all about her rough day and he has learnt how to allow her to talk her heart out without trying to fix anything. “Just listening” he highlights. In return Melissa has great trust and respect for Jannie and allows him to enjoy the fame and attention from his fans without the least bit of jealousy. Fortunately, she grew up around musicians and understands the environment. This seems to be the perfect recipe to ensure that two completely different worlds flow harmoniously.

On a more professional note:

Jannie studied BA Communication at the University of the Orange Free State and was mostly interested in a career as a politician. His aspirations changed radically after he joined TRUK. Music became his first love and he became the beloved Opera singer we all think of when we hear his name.

As an opera singer Jannie traveled the World and experienced great and opulent opera houses, this also satisfied his love for old buildings and architecture. European competitions opened more lucrative doors and that helped him to generate work there. He is obsessed with research and will always investigate any direction before he explores it, even in the dramatic world of Opera he found it helpful.

Back in SA he challenged his own versatility by hosting a karaoke TV Show and loved the process thereof. He especially enjoys dealing with the South African people on his local tours and are extremely grateful that so many South Africans share his love for music. After 11 years of singing opera, and reaching great heights in the industry, he transitioned into the Afrikaans light classical music genre. He slowly reinvented himself with the help of key people in his life and his incredible singing talent. He was able to reach great heights as a well-loved Afrikaans musician. He loves all the magical collaborations he has had with Artists of light and classical genres over the years and learn something special from each Artist or group he teamed up with.

The lockdown has not been financially kind to artists in general and Jannie had to reinvent himself yet again. He had to learn new skills very quickly as the entertainment business and big shows came to a complete halt the minute the virus hit South Africa.

Jannie always had a burning passion for property and feels that every house holds its own special energy and like a life partner, every house will eventually attract the perfect owner that was meant for it. He is now registered as an estate agent with Remax Hartbeespoort and is determent to make a success out of selling properties. The Remax team is extremely professional, supportive, and accommodating. This made the transition from stage to property much easier. He can absolutely see himself as a long-term property professional. This is the kind of industry that also gives him the freedom to still pursue his art.  Hartbeespoort is still seen as the Monaco of South Africa and he believes that the Town will once more rise to the occasion when all the challenges are dealt with sufficiently.

Jannie also opened a sanitizing depo at French Toast with fellow singer and entertainer, Kevin Leo. Readers can get more info about the depot in our flipside article.

Melissa-Jo Sharpe received her BSc Dietetics cum laude at the North West University. This was a strategic move to bridge her way into the Medical field that has been her big dream since she can remember. She did however appreciate the knowledge she accumulated in the nutritional field. She was particularly interested in Pediatrics but found it extremely difficult to get admittance for her first choice. Dentistry was always the second choice on her application forms.

In 2010 she got accepted by Wits University and received her BDS degree in Dentistry. She believes that Dentistry was God’s first choice for her and now realizes that it was the best direction for her future. She is someone that always aims to better herself and would like to specialize in Orthodontics. This is the part of Dentistry she enjoys the most.

She opened her own practice The Dental Fairy in July 2019. She was reluctant but was pleasantly surprised by all the love and support she received from the local community. She loves working with people and especially children. She is well known locally for her friendly and sparkling personality.

After the lockdown was announced it has not been easy to keep going financially after just opening a new practice. Fortunately, Dentistry was declared an essential service but just to keep up with all the COVID regulations is a challenge. All the extra precautions are expensive, but Melissa is staying positive and does her best to ensure safety and excellent service for her patients.

Melissa and Jannie are both positive and hardworking people. They devote all their energy in building their businesses from the ground up to generate a steady income.
