HBC MEMBER PROFILE – SULETTE BEKKER
My motivation is deeply rooted in seeing tangible changes in my clients’ lives—hearing their stories, witnessing their journeys from financial distress to stability, and knowing my work truly matters. Additionally, my faith, family support, especially from my husband and daughter Amanda, and a strong commitment to personal growth through constant learning and networking, continually fuel my passion and resilience. The birth of my baby, small Dawie, at the age of 43, was one of the biggest miracles of my life, and I would be nothing without the grace of God. I am by no means perfect—but I deeply love my creator and my family.

1. What inspired you to start your business, and how did you turn your idea into reality?
My journey into debt counselling was deeply personal. I tragically lost a close friend who struggled silently with debt, and that heartbreaking experience ignited my passion for helping others facing similar hardships. I wanted to create a compassionate space where individuals could openly address their financial stress without fear of judgment. Turning this vision into reality involved extensive research, obtaining my formal qualifications, registering with the NCR, and launching Debt Success, where I’ve built a platform focused on empathy, education, and empowerment.
2. What has been your biggest challenge as an entrepreneur, and how did you overcome it?
The biggest challenge I faced was balancing my innate desire to help everyone with the practical realities of running a sustainable business. Initially, I often undervalued my services, which led to burnout and financial strain. I overcame this by learning to set healthy boundaries, clearly defining my service offerings, and implementing structured financial wellness programs. Adopting these disciplined practices allowed me to continue supporting clients passionately while ensuring the longevity and growth of my business.
3. How do you stay motivated during tough times, and what keeps you passionate about your work?
My motivation is deeply rooted in seeing tangible changes in my clients’ lives—hearing their stories, witnessing their journeys from financial distress to stability, and knowing my work truly matters. Additionally, my faith, family support, especially from my husband and daughter Amanda, and a strong commitment to personal growth through constant learning and networking, continually fuel my passion and resilience. The birth of my baby, small Dawie, at the age of 43, was one of the biggest miracles of my life, and I would be nothing without the grace of God. I am by no means perfect—but I deeply love my creator and my family.
4. What advice would you give to someone who wants to start their own business but is afraid to take the first step?
Start by believing in yourself and your vision. Understand that fear is natural, but let it propel you forward, not hold you back. Begin small, gather knowledge, network actively, and surround yourself with mentors who can guide you. Most importantly, align your business with your personal values and passions, because that alignment will sustain you through challenges. Remember, every successful entrepreneur was once exactly where you are now—take the leap.
5. How do you see your industry evolving over the next five years, and how are you preparing for those changes?
I foresee significant shifts toward digitalisation, increased automation, and a stronger emphasis on financial education and proactive wellness coaching. To prepare, Debt Success is already expanding its digital presence, automating client onboarding and interactions, and offering online courses and interactive toolkits. I’m also deeply investing in educational outreach programs to equip people, especially the youth, with the skills needed for sustainable financial health. My goal is to continuously innovate, adapt, and remain ahead of these trends to serve our community effectively.
