HBC MEMBER PROFILE – PULSE HARTIES

E.M.S. stands for Electrical Muscle Stimulation. It’s a cutting-edge training method where you wear a special suit that sends safe, low-frequency impulses to your muscles while you exercise.

These impulses mimic your brain’s natural signals, making your muscles contract more deeply and effectively—without putting strain on your joints.

Pulse Harties is such a unique and energised name—what inspired you to start an E.M.S. training business in Hartbeespoort, and how did the idea first come about as a family venture?

I was first introduced to E.M.S. training in 2016, during a particularly demanding period when balancing career commitments made it difficult to find time for regular exercise. Despite the busy schedule, the efficiency of E.M.S. training was remarkable—I found that a single E.M.S. session per week delivered better results than three sessions per week with a personal trainer. This discovery not only sparked my passion for the technology, but also planted the seed for sharing its benefits with others. The idea gradually grew into a family venture, driven by the desire to offer a smarter, time-effective approach to well-being for the Hartbeespoort community.  With her sports background, Marlise quickly saw E.M.S. training’s benefits for both athletes and fitness enthusiasts. She realised it could help busy professionals and those seeking to improve performance or recovery. We created Pulse Harties as an efficient training hub where the community can discover new ways to achieve their goals and well-being.

Many people still don’t fully understand what E.M.S. training is—how would you explain it to someone who has never tried it, and what are the key benefits you’ve seen in your clients?

Working as a mother-daughter team is quite special. How has that dynamic influenced your business journey, and what strengths do each of you bring to the business?

The inspiration to open our own E.M.S. studio came in 2020. At the time, I was running my accounting business, but each week I found myself making the long drive to Centurion just to attend an E.M.S. session. That experience planted a seed: what if we could bring this innovative training closer to home? Marlise, already passionate about sports science and technology, was eager to dive deeper and become a qualified personal trainer. It felt like the perfect partnership—she would guide our clients on the fitness floor, while I could focus on the essential management and administrative work every business needs. Together, we set out to create a welcoming E.M.S. studio in Harties, blending our strengths to help our community discover a powerful and accessible path to wellness.

Marlise’s schedule is uniquely shaped by her ongoing participation in competitions; she not only needs to maintain her own peak fitness, but also personally tests new training programs before introducing them to her clients. This dual purpose means her training sessions are both a laboratory for innovation and a cornerstone of her competitive edge. Meanwhile, Marlinda carves out dedicated time for her own wellness, attending her regular training slot twice a week. This personal commitment ensures she remains energized and connected to the studio’s core values, serving as a role model for both staff and clients.
