My Transformative Global Gap Year Journey with Baret Scholars
After finishing my high school years at Hartbeespoort High School, I moved to Japan to complete my grades 10 through 12. By the time I graduated, I felt a strong pull to take a gap year before diving into university. For me, this gap year wasn’t just about taking a break from academics; it was an opportunity to expand my worldview, gain valuable life skills, and immerse myself in experiences that I couldn’t get from a classroom. The Baret Scholars program seemed like the perfect fit.

I’m Christiaan Burger, a student from Hartbeespoort, and I’m excited to share how my gap year has turned into one of the most transformative experiences of my life. Recently, I was awarded a $105,000 scholarship to join the Baret Scholars program, a global initiative that offers exceptional students like me the opportunity to travel the world, discover new passions, and develop a deeper sense of purpose. So far, this journey has been filled with unforgettable experiences that combine travel, learning, and personal growth.

Why Baret Scholars?
Baret Scholars is an incredible global gap year program that selects over 100 exceptional students from around the world. The program takes scholars to seven vibrant regions, where we explore our passions, engage with inspiring leaders, and work on impactful projects. The regions we explore include New York, São Paulo, Paris, Istanbul, Nairobi, Delhi, and Beijing, with a grand graduation in Hokkaido, Japan.
The program kicks off with an orientation week at the beautiful Eagle Mountain House in New Hampshire, where we bond with other scholars and get ready for our global adventure. What’s unique about Baret Scholars is that it’s not just about travel—it’s about self-discovery and leadership development. We’re encouraged to grow personally and professionally, and those skills will stay with us long after the program ends.
Fellowships and Unforgettable Experiences
One of the highlights of the Baret Scholars experience is the opportunity to participate in fellowships. These fellowships give us the chance to explore different educational themes and connect with leaders from various fields. I had the privilege of participating in a fellowship in Mexico City, where I met key figures in Mexican government policy, spoke with top investors, and dined at the oldest restaurant in the city.
“I had the chance to meet the CEO of Miranda Partners, visit museums like the Museum of Anthropology, and experience Mexico’s rich culture—from Mariachi bands to Lucha Libre wrestling,” I shared. “It was an incredible blend of fun and deep learning.”
Other fellowships also offered amazing opportunities, from exploring the Amazon rainforest in Brazil to trekking through Patagonia, taking cooking classes in Italy, or meeting entrepreneurs in Silicon Valley. These experiences have not only been exciting but have truly helped shape my personal growth.
Capstone Projects: Making an Impact
Another cornerstone of the Baret experience is the Capstone Project, where we get to pursue a project we’re passionate about, supported by the Baret Fellows network. For my Capstone Project, I’m working on a cookbook that will showcase the diverse culinary traditions of the regions I’ve visited. It’s been an incredible journey so far, having met Michelin chefs in São Paulo, and I can’t wait to publish my book at the end of the program.
Morning Programs and Seminars: Learning from the Best
Every morning, we take part in a three-hour session featuring influential speakers from around the world. Some of these speakers include renowned figures like Walter Isaacson, Michael Moe, and Evelyn Webster, who share their insights on topics ranging from innovation and politics to leadership and personal development. These sessions have expanded my understanding of global issues and leadership in ways I never imagined.
Alongside the Morning Program, there are also various seminars where we can explore subjects like academic research, entrepreneurship, and language learning. I’ve personally been working on my entrepreneurial skills through the “Starting Things” program, where I collaborate with Chris Whittle, the founder of Baret Scholars, to launch my own business venture. It’s been an exciting challenge!
Personalized Support and College Counseling
What I really appreciate about Baret Scholars is the level of personalized support we receive. Each scholar is paired with a dedicated fellow who offers one-on-one counseling. This guidance has been invaluable, especially as I think about my future college and career path. I’ve received advice on everything from university applications to mental health, and it’s helped me gain clarity on what comes next.
“The support is incredible,” I’ve told my friends. “I’ve already gained so much clarity on my future career path.”
Why Everyone Should Try Baret Scholars
For me, the Baret Scholars program has been a life-changing experience that has not only enriched my education but also shaped how I view the world. “I never imagined a gap year could offer such a diverse range of opportunities,” I often say. “From traveling the world to meeting inspiring people, it’s been truly one of a kind.”
If you’re thinking about a gap year, I can’t recommend Baret Scholars enough. Whether you want to explore new cultures, pursue a passion, or launch an entrepreneurial venture, this program offers an unparalleled global experience. It’s an experience that will set you apart in both your personal and professional life.
