Harties Business Center member profile

Harties Business Center member Ruby Rapscallion tells us about their business.

How did you decide to start Ruby Rapscallion?

For a long time, I had a dream to run a business of my own but feared of failing. When I found myself facing struggles and tough times, I had to make a choice and take that leap of faith. So, I went out and purchased a second-hand laser cutting machine, with truly little capital to speak of, and 5 years down the line I have no regrets. I put my all into this business of mine – literally.

What does your company name stand for?

Our business is highly creative and experimental. We are constantly trying new things in different ways. So, I would rather give the correct information and advice rather than making a quick sale. Repeat customers are far more valuable when they trust you.

What is the most rewarding thing about your business?

Our creativeness. No product is 100% the same and every day brings a new challenge. After all the creative process and R&D done, to see the final product that brings a smile to our clients faces. People who know me, know that I would rather stick needles in my eyes than have a boring job!

Do you think there is a future in the engraving business in South Africa?

Laser cutting is so versatile. The sizes of the machines range from a small desktop to large factory size machines. Home based business to industrial factories. South Africa is seeing a surge in entrepreneurial activity now. There is only one way to go and that is up.

There are quite a few laser cutters in our little area, but we do not bump into each other because we are all busy with different markets. The machines are constantly evolving so I think the future is wide open for anything we can dream up!
